NA-Q&A-DiplomaticRElationTo solve the issues at home should Bhutan suspend the expansion of diplomatic relations was one of the issues raised in the question hour session of the National Assembly today.

The Lamgong-Wangchang MP, Khandu Wangchuk, questioned the foreign minister if it is right for a small country like Bhutan to suspend diplomatic relations. “Many countries and international organisations were worried to hear the news,” he added.

Responding to this the Foreign Minister, Rinzin Dorje, clarified that the government did not make any such statement. Lyonpo said over the last five years the former government has established relations with 53 countries and it is too huge for a country like Bhutan. He added before expanding diplomatic relations, pros and cons should be examined.

The Lamgong-Wangchang MP said expansion in diplomatic relations will help in protecting country’s security, sovereignty and in receiving assistance for developmental activities.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said that the government have suspended the expansion for time being to focus more on internal problems that the country is undergoing right now.
