Zhemgang-Pollution-RoadConstrcution.The 4.2 kilometre bypass road that will shorten the distance between Tingtibi and Gongphu in Zhemgang is mainly being constructed for the upcoming Chamkharchu Hydropower Project in Degala. The road is also expected to benefit the four gewogs of Lower Kheng.

At the moment though, locals have been complaining of tremendous dust pollution due to the road and other developmental activities taking place.

“The town is covered with dust and even our vegetables have been affected. We don’t know where or who to complain to,” said a resident from Tingtibi, Tsering Lhadon.

We have become more prone to cough and cold due to the dust.”

Another resident, Kinley Wangdi, said after the construction of the bypass road began from Tingtibi to Goling, the dust pollution increased. “Even the blasting at site is dangerous.”

Officials from the Department of Roads in Tingtibi maintain that the construction of the road is per environment regulations but in parts that are steep and rocky, they have not been able to dampen the area before progressing with work. The only respite for Tingtibi residents may be the news that the road will be completed in another three months.
