Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche unveiled the conceptual design of Druk Ugyen Samye Ling in Gelephu Mindfulness City yesterday. Inspired by Samye Monastery in Tibet, the proposed spiritual complex is expected to begin construction by the end of this year, with completion targeted for 2029.
Built between 775 and 779 AD under the patronage of Tibetan King Trisong Detsen, Samye Monastery is regarded as the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet. Its distinctive architecture combines Tibetan, Chinese and Indian styles, with the central temple symbolising Mount Meru, the sacred centre of the Buddhist universe.
Druk Ugyen Samye Ling will be established in Gelephu Mindfulness City, inspired by this historic monastery. According to the design consultant, the proposed structures and temple facilities will follow the layout and architectural principles of the original Samye Monastery.
During the unveiling, Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche highlighted the spiritual significance of the proposed project.
“His Majesty The King envisions building a monastery in Gelephu inspired by the sacred Samye Monastery. This noble vision carries a profound spiritual aspiration: to bring peace to the world, diminish suffering caused by illness, conflict, and war, and nurture compassion, harmony, and prosperity among all sentient beings. May this sacred endeavour further strengthen the peace and happiness our country has long cherished, ensuring that these precious blessings endure for generations to come,” Rinpoche said.
The complex will cover more than 20 acres and feature 15 types of temples surrounded by 1,008 chortens.
Namgay Dorjee, Design Consultant at Namey Samey Studios, said, “We have based the proposed design and dimensions on the original Samye Monastery, in keeping with Rinpoche’s vision and expectations. At present, the design remains a preliminary concept and will continue to be refined until Rinpoche is fully satisfied. The design has not yet been submitted to the Gelephu Mindfulness City for approval.”
The initiative also includes plans to create 100,000 statues of Ugyen Norlha, reflecting the project’s religious significance.
Tenzin Jamtsho, Regional Director of Druk Ugyen Samye Ling Limited, said, “Druk Ugyen Samye Ling Temple is envisioned to replicate the original Samye Monastery in Tibet. In addition, we plan to create 100,000 statues of Ugyen Norlha, reflecting our collective devotion and aspiration to receive the blessings of Guru Rinpoche. This sacred undertaking is intended to invoke spiritual protection, avert misfortune and obstacles, and bring blessings, prosperity, and well-being to all.”
The organisation also launched its official website as part of the programme.
With an estimated investment of Nu 5bn, Druk Ugyen Samye Ling will be a Buddhist spiritual and cultural destination in Gelephu Mindfulness City.
