Once a long drive to Ramtokto for vehicle emission testing has now become a shorter journey for vehicle owners in Thimphu. Following public complaints about the distance and accessibility of the emission testing centre, the facility has now been relocated to Jungshina.
The emission testing centre was relocated from Olakha to Ramtokto last year after Green Bhutan Services, which operates the facility, could not secure approval from the Thromde Office to continue operating at the previous site.
However, many vehicle owners found the new location difficult to access. Located more than 13 kilometres from the city, the centre was reached by a rough road that made the trip inconvenient.
Following repeated public complaints, the testing centre was relocated to Jungshina more than a month ago.
“Earlier, the testing centre was at Ramtokto, and it was very inconvenient. It was also very far, and we had to go through the bumpy roads. But this one, I think it is rightly located, except people still don’t know the exact location,” said Rana, Vehicle Owner, Thimphu.
“It’s much more convenient here. The earlier location was far, and the roads were also narrow. As it’s shifted here, the location is nice, and the road is wide as well. I just hope the centre stays at one location,” said Dhan Bdr. Khapangi, Vehicle Owner, Dagana.
“The old location took a lot of time, especially for office-goers. Now it’s much more convenient,” said Sonam Norbu, Vehicle Owner, Thimphu.
“It was particularly difficult for women drivers because it was rough and steep. This location is much more convenient,” said Khandu Wangmo, Vehicle Owner, Thimphu.
Green Bhutan Services says it relocated the facility after receiving numerous complaints. The company had been searching for a more accessible site.
“Since moving here, people have told us it is much more convenient. They also find it easier to visit the BCTA office because it is nearby,” said Karma Tshering, Office-in-Charge, Green Bhutan Services.
According to the Bhutan Construction and Transport Authority, vehicle fitness and emission testing are mandatory to ensure vehicles are roadworthy, safe for public use, and environmentally compliant.
The test is also required for the renewal of vehicle registration.
For vehicle owners in Thimphu, the move to Jungshina means a shorter and more convenient trip for an essential service.
