To strengthen collaboration and promote uniformity in legal practices across government agencies, legal professionals from across the country gathered in Tsirang for a three-day conference. The meeting also served as a platform for legal professionals to exchange experiences and identify legal and administrative challenges. The conference titled ‘Government Legal Professionals’ Conference’ was organised by the Office of the Attorney General and ended yesterday.

More than a hundred legal professionals from various government agencies attended the conference. It provided a valuable opportunity to connect and enhance collaboration, which will support them in delivering effective service delivery to the public.

The participants also discussed key challenges in delivering services within their respective agencies. In addition to identifying issues, they proposed practical solutions to improve the efficiency, inclusiveness, and responsiveness of the justice system.

The conference also featured technical sessions focused on significant legal developments, including the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act 2025.

During the training, the Attorney General emphasised the importance of teamwork, collaboration, knowledge sharing and mutual support among legal professionals to ensure Bhutan’s justice system effectively serves all citizens.

“This has not just been a discourse on issues but also a great platform for our participants to network and also share experiences through the sessions we have curated specifically for our young legal professionals who have just joined the profession,” said Yeshey Dema, an attorney with the Office of the Attorney General.

Participants said the training enhanced their knowledge and broadened legal perspectives, particularly for young legal professionals.

“The conference has provided us with tools to make our work easier. We can now seek help from colleagues when we have doubts. The training also provided us to connect with legal professionals from diverse backgrounds. This will help us support each other to resolve problems when working in respective government agencies,” said Kinley Dhuendup Namgyel, a participant.

Another participant Pema Dorji said, “We have so many legal-related issues in the ministries and agencies. Through this conference, we were able to resolve most of the issues through question-and- answer sessions as officials from different agencies were invited during the conference.”

Based on the discussions and insights from the conference, the Office of the Attorney General will work on developing actionable plans and engage with stakeholders to implement the recommendations.

The participants say conferences like this will go a long way in delivering a people-centric justice toward building a more responsive and efficient justice system in Bhutan.
