Her Majesty Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck, met with students, local leaders and officials as part of the High-Level Advocacy Tour yesterday in Samtse. The advocacy, themed “Rights, Justice, Action: For All Women and Girls,” is to raise awareness on women’s health, rights and social issues while encouraging collective action from communities and stakeholders.

During the advocacy programme held at Samtse College of Education, Her Majesty delivered a keynote address highlighting the importance of women’s health and rights. Her Majesty said that a woman’s dignity and autonomy depend on her ability to access quality healthcare and make informed decisions about her own body.

Her Majesty reminded the students that as future educators, they hold one of the most powerful tools for change, teaching not just subjects but shaping attitudes, values and mindsets.

“It is my firm belief that when women and girls thrive, families prosper, communities grow stronger, and the nation moves forward. It is also important to recognise that men and boys are valuable partners in this journey. When men lead with understanding and respect, we build stronger families and stronger communities together. This shared responsibility becomes even more important in the world our young people are growing up in.”

Officials also presented on pressing social and public health issues. The tour includes stakeholders such as RENEW, the National Commission for Women and Children, the Pema Secretariat, the Ministry of Health, the United Nations Population Fund, and the Office of the Attorney General.

They emphasised on addressing emerging social challenges, which require collective and coordinated action, stronger multi-sectoral collaboration, and active youth engagement.

During the question-and-answer session, participants raised concerns on several issues, including workplace harassment, access to long-term birth control methods for young people, mental health concerns, and the well-being of children affected by divorce.

Her Majesty also met with the members of a community network that works on health and social issues upon arriving in Samtse from Haa on Monday. Her Majesty acknowledged their dedicated efforts in supporting communities and responding to public health priorities and social issues.

Participants also raised concerns about social challenges that could arise with the growing number of industries in the area, highlighting the need for timely intervention.

Her Majesty The Queen Mother, who is leading the advocacy tour, will continue the programme in Phuentshogling tomorrow.
