Their Majesties Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck and Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck, along with members of the Royal Family, graced a cultural exchange programme between Bhutan and China yesterday evening. Celebrating the Chinese New Year, a troupe from Zhejiang Province of the People’s Republic of China showcased music, dance, and opera.
One of the major highlights was Wu Opera, also known as Jinhua Opera, a traditional art form that originated from the Jinhua region of Zhejiang. Recognised on China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List, the opera captivated the audience with its stylised movements, elaborate costumes, and powerful vocals.
Adding drama and excitement to the evening was the performance “Three Triumphs over the Skeletal Demon”. Adapted from the classical novel Journey to the West, the act portrayed courage and wisdom of the Monkey King. It featured dramatic face-changing scenes and rapid costume transformations, blending traditional opera with modern stagecraft.
The performances offered Bhutanese audiences an opportunity to experience the diversity of Chinese cultural traditions while further strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
Since its premiere in March 2023, the troupe has toured 25 countries.
The cultural celebration will continue today.
