During the upcoming parliament session, the National Council will deliberate on addressing the issues surrounding the country’s healthcare system. According to the council’s Economic Affairs Committee’s chairperson, although the health sector has improved over the years, challenges such as human resource shortages and inadequate health infrastructure remain across the country.

At the press conference today, the Chairperson of the Economic Affairs Committee stated that the House of Review will discuss four main areas of concern regarding the country’s healthcare system, including governance and management of healthcare services.

“Some health workers feel that the establishment of the National Medical Services is beneficial as it addresses issues quickly. However, others say the NMS and the health ministry are quite similar, with the main difference being in management and administration. We have also heard about coordination issues between the two,” said Tshewang Rinchen, the chairperson of the Economic Affairs Committee, NC.

It will also discuss the impact of human resource shortages and inadequate healthcare infrastructure on the quality of health service delivery and propose recommendations to resolve these issues.

Furthermore, the committee will examine and propose increasing the budget for the health sector.

Tshewang Rinchen said, “The highest share of the budget often goes to health and education. But if the health sector is given just a little more, it can make a big difference and help address the issue of HR shortages and infrastructure development.”

The session will also review reports on the ACC’s annual report 2024-2025, climate-resilient watershed management, and developments in key economic sectors.

In addition, three amendment bills will be taken up, alongside deliberations on the BIMSTEC convention on mutual legal criminal matters, international agreements on maritime transport cooperation, and the free trade agreement between Thailand and Bhutan.

The 36th session of the National Council will begin on Thursday and conclude on 26th next month.
