In Samtse’s Phuntshopelri Gewog, a community took matters into its own hands, showing that real change begins when people come together and take action. United by their commitment to education, local stakeholders worked hand in hand to build new classrooms and an assembly ground recently, bringing renewed hope and a better future for the area.
For years, Gayshing Gaon Primary School in Samtse struggled with poor infrastructure, leaky roofs during the monsoon and sweltering heat in old classrooms.
According to the principal, who joined the school last year, the conditions were challenging, especially for the students. Determined to make a change, she began reaching out to local stakeholders to improve the learning environment for the students.
“If we wait for the government to do everything for us, it is going to take a long time because there are many schools that the government has to look after. However, if you take the initiative and seek support from the community, nothing is impossible. So, after I got here last year, I approached Opening Your Heart to Bhutan and Penden Cement to seek their support in improving the school,” said Tshering Dema, Principal, Gayshing Gaon Primary School, Samtse.
This milestone has not only improved the school’s physical infrastructure but also lifted the spirits of students, teachers, and the entire community.
“They have helped us build four units of classrooms, which will benefit our younger youths. This shows their love and care towards our youth. They are a role model who supports the community and children,” said Gangla, Teacher, Gayshing Gaon Primary School, Samtse.
“Before we had this new classroom. Our classrooms were small and dark. Now, it has changed, and our classrooms are big, beautiful and bright. We feel happy and proud to learn in a nice place. We will always be grateful to those who helped us and will study hard,” said Sushmita Rai, Student, Gayshing Gaon Primary School, Samtse.
“We are very happy to have these new classrooms. Before this, rainwater leaked in whenever it rained. Now this new structure is very nice with good facilities,” said Kinley, Student, Gayshing Gaon Primary School, Samtse.
Completed in just two months, the project has transformed the school into a safer and more child-friendly space for learning. What could have cost over Nu 5 M was completed for just Nu 1.8 M, thanks to generous support from Opening Your Heart to Bhutan, Penden Cement, Lhaki Cement, Society Switzerland Bhutan, the district administration, and residents.
Established in 2010, the school now serves nearly 100 students and benefits over 250 households.
