Helipad completion delays private helicopter arrival

The country will receive its first private helicopter next month. Heli Bhutan initially planned to bring the aircraft this month. However, delays in completing the helipad have pushed back the arrival. The FDI company aims to enhance connectivity and boost tourism.

The helipad at Ramtokto in Thimphu was completed recently. Heli Bhutan still has to build the hangar before the Airbus H-125 arrives. The materials for the hangar are on-site.

According to the company, the delay would not have happened if the Department of Urban Planning and Development had approved the helipad earlier.

“The construction of the helipad and hangar caused the delay. We needed regulatory approvals, inspections, and clearance from Thimphu Urban Development, which took almost two months,” said Chencho Dorji, the CEO of Heli Bhutan.

Heli Bhutan plans to offer aerial tours of the country to tourists and medical evacuation in emergencies.

The company had already received pre-bookings for scenic tours, but the delays have affected bookings.

“We’re 90 per cent complete and hope to start operations soon. The pilots are expected within one to two weeks.”

The new French-made helicopter, known for its high-altitude performance and versatility, can carry six people per trip. Once it arrives, Bhutan will have three helicopters in total.
