The Department of Industry launched a new online portal called the Invest Bhutan Portal yesterday, as part of its efforts to boost foreign investment. This user-friendly platform simplifies the process for international businesses looking to invest in the country.

The portal will serve as a hub for all foreign direct investment (FDI) information.

Investors can access clear and up-to-date details on investment policies, procedures, and potential business opportunities in Bhutan.

The website also features standard operating procedures, recent policy updates, and clear guidelines, ensuring a smooth and informed investment experience.

During the launch, the Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Employment, Namgyal Dorji said that the portal is a timely initiative, especially as Bhutan intensifies its efforts to attract more foreign direct investments.

“In the past two decades, Bhutan has attracted around Nu 43bn in foreign direct investment. Building on this foundation, we have an ambitious goal of reaching Nu 500bn. To achieve this, we are developing comprehensive plans and policies. The Invest Bhutan Portal will play a crucial role in attracting more investors to Bhutan.”

The portal also offers services such as obtaining business visas, securing investor cards, FDI registration, and project approvals.

It includes features such as a chatbot and an FAQ section, enabling investors to easily find information on investment opportunities in Bhutan.

However, officials from the Department of Industry emphasized that the portal isn’t solely for foreign businesses.

Government departments can use it to improve efficiency, while service providers like legal and consulting firms can showcase their services.

According to the FDI Annual Report 2023, the Department of Industry approved 12 FDI projects worth almost Nu 8bn in 2023.
