The drinking water shortage that the residents of Gelephu Gewog faced recently has been resolved. The Gelephu Thromde resolved the water issue by supplying water from the recently completed Thromde Water Treatment Plant.

Residents of Lekithang, Dzomlingthang and Pemathang of Gelephu Gewog have been provided drinking water from the Gelephu Thromde Water Treatment Plant since Friday.

The majority of the people in Gelephu Gewog depend on livestock farming as one of the main sources of livelihood.

Without a designated water source for livestock farming, they depend on the drinking water source to feed their animals resulting in the shortage of water.

The old water source usually dries up in winter due to scanty rainfall.

“We had sufficient water supply yesterday. We will receive water tomorrow afternoon as well. So, we will be able to see if the water supply is adequate. Normally, we used to receive water for up to three hours only,” said Mohan Lal Pradhan, a resident.

“Water supply from the new source is much more convenient. When depending on the old water source, we were provided water every alternate day, and that too for a maximum of three hours which was very difficult to manage. Now, it has been around four days since we started receiving water on a daily basis for up to three hours. It is much better now,” said Phurpa Wangchuk, another resident.

According to Gelephu Gup, residents of other two villages of Pelrithang Khatoed and Pelrithang Khamaed will have to depend on the current water source until the completion of the realignment of their pipes which is expected to be completed within two months.

Gelephu Gewog has more than a thousand households with a population of close to 4,500.

Gelephu Thromde Water Treatment Plant is located at Dechenpelri village of Samtenling Gewog.
