The construction of the first artificial turf football ground in Trongsa has finally been completed following several hurdles. However, football enthusiasts in the district have yet to enjoy a game of football on the newly constructed ground. The wall supporting the ground collapsed within a month after it was handed over to the district administration. The construction of the artificial turf football ground began in April last year.

Upon completion of almost all the works, half of the retaining wall supporting the ground collapsed in July this year.

According to the residents of Sherubling, during the time of the incident, there was neither heavy rainfall nor other natural event that could have caused the collapse.

Some of them accused that the collapse could be due to poor quality work.

“We have been excited when we heard that Trongsa will have the first artificial turf football ground. It is not complete yet and we expect it to be completed sooner,” said Tandin Dorji, a resident.

The wall which extends 100m in length and 2.5m in breadth was completed and handed over to the district in June. The construction of the sports facility was carried out in two packages by two contractors.

According to the District Administration, the officials and the contractor who constructed the wall and fencing are currently negotiating the reconstruction of the wall. The initial estimated cost for the construction of the wall and fencing was Nu 11.5 M.

Meanwhile, the gallery and the ground development works have been completed which is estimated to cost Nu 11.2 M. The ground is being taken care of by the Sherubling Central School.

Despite the numerous issues related to the construction works, football enthusiasts are looking forward to the new football ground.

“For the first time in Trongsa, we are having artificial turf football ground, particularly in Sherubling Central School. I feel very happy because I really love playing football. I will get to play with my friends and teachers if the football ground gets completed faster,” said Raju Subba, a student.

The construction of the ground was supposed to be completed by October last year. However, it got delayed as the district had to terminate the contract in September last year due to slow work progress.
