Travelling to the bordering town of Datgari has become convenient for those in Gelephu. The Gelephu Thromde has constructed a waiting shed for commuters. Until recently, people, especially those unable to register for CPMS online, had to wait at the border gate in the scorching heat and heavy rain when visiting the bordering town.

Commuters expressed gratitude to the Gelephu Thromde office for constructing the waiting shed.

“In the past, we had to wait in open spaces in the rain and sun. Now, the government has provided us with such a facility that makes entering and exiting the country convenient,” said Guman Singh Tamang, a resident.

“We used to get drenched in the rain and sweat under the sweltering sun. But now it is convenient. The government was gracious,” said Padam Lal Sarki Dorji, another resident.

Gelephu Thromde constructed the waiting shed as part of the border gate maintenance works for the convenience of travellers.

“We find that it has really benefited commuters travelling outside. They have to wait while their documents are being examined. They don’t have to wait outside in the rain or in the heat. There is positive feedback from the public,” said Tshering Norbu, Gelephu Thrompon.

According to data from the border checkpoint, more than 2000 Bhutanese travel across the border to Datgari market in Assam every Thursday.
