National Day TikTok challenge sees increasing number of participants

TikTok, a short video-sharing application, has become very popular in the country in the last couple of years. Taking advantage of the popularity, the National Day Coordination Committee is organising a National Day TikTok challenge as part of the National Day build-up programme. The challenge engages youth to create a 60-second gratitude video on the National Day song. And the challenge is seeing an increasing number of participants.

So far, more than 300 people have participated in the National Day 2022 hashtag dance challenge. And since December 8, the organisers have been selecting a winner every and awarding them with a cash prize of Nu 5,000.

Dorji Wangmo is one of the winners of the National Day TikTok challenge. A dancer by profession, Dorji took the challenge to pay her gratitude to His Majesty The King by doing what she does best.

“There are a lot of participants for the National Day’s TikTok challenge but the unique feature I had that made me a winner must be because of the extra effort I put in while making the video. After the dance, I downloaded images of our Kings, the Bhutan map and our national flag and then inserted them in the video according to the lyrics,” said Dorji Wangmo, one of the TikTok challenge winners.

Similarly, another winner, Ugyen Pemo, said winning the challenge is a reward for her passion.

“I participated in the challenge because I have a genuine interest in dancing. Secondly, I saw the trend of the TikTok challenge and my friends also suggested I try it. Thirdly, the prize money for the winners and its dedication to the National Day made me excited to try it,” said Ugyen Pemo, another TikTok challenge winner.

The winners are judged based on their original choreography of the National Day song by the Committee.

As per the Committee, since the winners have repeatedly been women, they will also pick winners for six categories on 17th December. They will be for the best male, child, groups, Bhutanese living outside and persons with disabilities.

The National Day TikTok challenge was initiated on December 4. So far, the committee has awarded six winners.
