The two-day Men’s Summer Volleyball Championship in Thimphu ended yesterday. ND Tech Spikers were crowned the champions. They defeated Dorling United in the finals. The game was organised by the Bhutan Volley Federation at the Changlimithang volleyball court.

It was a slow start for the ND Tech Spikers. Losing the first two straight sets, everyone thought it was all but over. But they came back strong and won the remaining three sets to lift the champion’s trophy.

‘‘From 20 Dzongkhags about 26 teams participated in this Championship. Out of 26 teams, we, the Spikers team are very glad for standing first,’’ said Thinley Dorji, the Captain of ND Tech Spikers.

‘‘It was a tough competition. While we could not win the match today, we believe that anything can happen if we train well. We are thankful to the Bhutan Volleyball Federation for giving us such opportunities. We hope they will organise such tournaments,” said Sonam Tenzin, the Captain of the Dorling United.

With synthetic-floored courts and lighting facilities, it was an experience for the players and spectators as well. The tournament was witnessed by hundreds of volleyball lovers.

According to the Bhutan Volleyball Federation, with the development of infrastructure, many young people have been showing interest in volleyball sport.

‘‘We are very happy with the results of organizing and conducting this tournament. We had participants from many diverse and competitive teams in this tournament. The 2022 Summer Volleyball Championship was very successful in this regard,” said Umang Deep Rai, the Assistant Program Officer for the Bhutan Volleyball Federation.

The winners and runners-up were awarded team trophies, individual medals and cash prizes.
