To accelerate post-pandemic economy recovery, the Government will be constructing numerous small hydropower projects across the country. Yungichhu Hydropower Project in Maedtsho Gewog in Lhuentse is one such project. The Prime Minister graced the Salang Tendrel of the 32 MW project, today.

The Yungichhu Hydropower Project will cost the government more than Nu 3.5bn and is expected to complete in three years.

The government will also construct a 54 MW Burgangchhu Hydropower Project in Zhemgang and an 18 MW Suchhu Hydropower Project in Haa in the first phase.

The three projects are expected to employ at least a thousand Bhutanese youth during the construction phase. That includes a hundred Desuups who will be deployed through the Desuung National Service for Hydropower Construction at the Yungichhu.

The Druk Green Power Corporation is currently conducting feasibility studies for four more potential projects in the second phase.

According to a press release from Prime Minister’s Office, the projects are expected to assist during times of natural disasters when the power supply from the main grid is disrupted.
