Four-lane arch bridge over Aipoli stream along Gelephu-Sarpang highway

Commuters along the Gelephu-Sarpang highway will soon have a four-lane arch bridge over the Aipoli stream. The bridge is under construction currently. Since the old bailey bridge was washed away in 2020, life has been difficult for the commuters, especially on rainy days when the stream swells.

The bailey bridge was constructed some two decades ago. But it was washed away in 2020. Following that the Gelephu Thromde made a bypass.

Although the bypass is narrow, vehicles can ply easily on sunny days. But when it rains, commuters have to wait for hours to let the water level subside.

“It is convenient when it doesn’t rain. But the weather is unpredictable,” said Tshering Tashi, a resident.

But much to their relief, the residents will soon no longer have to worry about the swollen stream. Construction Development Corporation is constructing a new four-lane arch bridge.

The construction works began last year and were scheduled for completion last month. However, the pandemic and heavy rainfall slowed the work progress. About 70 per cent of the works are completed as of now.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we could not complete the work on time. Procuring materials from India amid the pandemic delayed the work progress,” said Pema Gyeltshen, the site supervisor.

For now, Gelephu Thromde extended the contract period till October. CDCL is constructing the bridge at Nu 150 M with funding from the Indian Government.
