Paro Police detained an engineer with the Department of Roads and a woman yesterday. They are charged with negligent homicide and criminal nuisance. The woman dug a sewer line trench next to the road in Nemjo and left a pile of earth on the road. And that caused an accident killing a policeman on Sunday, according to Police.

On Sunday night the policeman was returning home from duty and he met with an accident. He was riding a motorbike when he allegedly hit a pile of earth on the road.

Sources said though the deceased was wearing a helmet he suffered a severe head injury. He was brought dead to the hospital. Health officials said the deceased was not under the influence of alcohol.

According to Police, the woman dug a sewer line trench beside the road with permission from the Roads Department in Paro. The site engineer was supposed to monitor the works. However, she was out of the station when the works were carried out on Sunday and could not monitor the site.

According to Police, there were a few accidents reported along the stretch in the past. They were hit-and-run cases and at times collisions with the cattle and horses. None of the incidents has claimed a life.

The accident-prone area is around one kilometre away from Paro town towards Drugyel Dzong. At night the visibility becomes poor in absence of street lights.
