Water shortage during monsoon has been a never-ending problem for the residents of Gyalpoizhing in Monggar. However, from next year, the problem is expected to ease with the completion of the National Service Water Project by the end of this year. For now, about 50 per cent of the works is complete.
Every day, the Desuups along with engineers, technicians and army travel about a kilometre to the construction site from their camp in Gyalpoizhing town.
As of today, the construction of a reservoir is complete. However, works to construct another reservoir and water pipelines are ongoing.
And DeSuups who are working on the project said they are learning life skills by engaging in such a project.
“We get to experience different works at the water project. We have to do works, which we haven’t done before. We are doing manual works like trenching, plumbing and other construction works,” said Desuup Tshering Choden.
Besides providing skills to the Desuups, once complete, the project will benefit about 1500 residents of Gyalpoizhing.
The water project started in June this year. The project is part of the DeSuung National Service to build water infrastructure across the country for the benefit of the people.
