The mitigation works of Thorthomi Lake has begun once again. In this working session, the lake is to be reduced by 1.32 meters to meet the target. In the last three working sessions, the lake has been reduced by 3.86 metres, after the mitigation work first began in 2008.

The target is to lower the lake by five meters or by 17 million cubic meters of water by the end of 2012.

Lowering the water level of Thorthomi Lake had failed the deadline. The project was supposed to be complete by 2011. Erratic weather condition and manpower shortage had led to the failure of meeting the deadline.

The working seasons of the mitigation works are usually carried out by June till the mid of October. The project is led by the Department of Geology and Mines and is supported by the United Nations Development Programme.
