By the end of this year, sports enthusiasts in Tsirang will have better facilities to play various games. The Bhutan Olympic Committee is constructing an indoor single-storied multi-sports hall in Damphu town. The sports facility will have volleyball, basketball, badminton and table tennis courts. The hall will also provide space for boxers and karate enthusiasts.

The COVID pandemic delayed the construction works which was scheduled for May this year. However, the contract duration has been postponed to December this year. As of now, over 35 per cent of the construction works are complete.

“The incessant rainfall in summer and cold weather in winter hinder matches when we have to play in open spaces. The ongoing indoor sports complex construction will provide us with a better place. We are excited about it,” said Jigme Sangay Wangpo.

“Once complete, the sporting facility will help keep youths engaged meaningfully. It will also keep them away from committing crimes and using drugs. Some of us have already started forming teams and we are looking for new sports gears,” added Pema Dorji.

The Indian government is financing the construction of the hall worth around Nu 35 M. Tsirang district administration is executing the works. Besides Tsirang, similar multi-sport halls are being constructed in Haa and Paro.
