The Gomphu Kora Lhakhang in Trashi Yangtse which is regarded as one of the sacred sites of Guru Rinpoche in the east is in dire need of renovation. Most of its pillars and planks have been damaged by insects for almost five years now. The walls too have developed cracks due to several earthquakes in the past.

The Trashi Yangtse district carried out floor plank maintenance in 2019. However, within a year, the insect started damaging the planks again. The Lhakhang has been arranging the monthly rituals in a room adjacent to the Lhakhang.

“Because of the damage and the risks, I allow less than seven people to enter the Lhakhang,” said Tenzin, the Dzongpon of the Lhakhang.

The district had requested the Department of Culture on the need for restoration works following which the department came for inspection.

“In their report, they have mentioned that the wooden material needs renovation while the walls are strong. But the wall cracks are so visible. The Dzongda has submitted another letter calling for an in-depth inspection including the walls,” said Ngawang Tenzin, the Lam Neten of Trashigang District.

The district is awaiting the department’s directives.

The Gomphu Kora Lhakhang is believed to be some 360 years old. Gomphu means a sacred meditation site of Guru Rinpochhe and Kora means circumambulation.
