Given the growing number of crimes in Chhudzom Gewog in Sarpang Dzongkhag, the Chhudzom Gewog Administration is requesting for a Gewog Gagdey Office or Gewog Based Police Outpost in their gewog.

According to the Gup, Chhudzom gewog recently witnessed an increase in the number of crimes due to the increasing population and settlements in the gewog. And with no access to police services, the gewog administration is facing difficulties in maintaining law and order in the gewog. He added among many other offenses, domestic violence is one of the common forms of offenses dealt with by the gewog administration today.

He fears most domestic violence cases can go unreported due to the absence of police outlets in the gewog.

“The people up there go against the law towards evening under the intoxication of alcohol. They head back home towards 10 to 11 pm and create problems at home. When such a problem arises they fail to contact us. Even if they wish to reach us and other relevant officials, they are not able to do so as there is no police outpost in the gewog and the district police station is located very far from here,” said Bishnu Prassad Rai, the Chhudzom Gup.

In response, the police officials from the Sarpang Police Station said that institution of the Gagdey Office would depend upon the varieties of severe crimes prevalent in a community. They added, so far, the office has not received any alarming crime report from the Chhudzom Gewog. The office however said that the head office in Thimphu will be informed regarding the matter.

“When it comes to the requirement of a Gagdgey office in a region, it does not depend on the growing number of population and settlements. We have to consider the severity of crimes and the extend of the crime rate in the area,” said Lieutenant Sangay Dorji, Sarpang Police Station.

Chhudzom Gewog is about 63 kilometers away from Sarpang Dzongkhag and has a total population of over 4,000.
