The construction of the mini vegetable markets across Thimphu Thromde has been delayed by over a month now. It was supposed to be complete by November 15. The construction works began in September this year.

There are six mini vegetable markets built in Taba, Jungshina, near Kalabazar, Babesa and one behind Norzin Lam. But all are yet to be complete.

About 80 to 90 per cent of the construction works in Lungtenphu has been completed. And the remaining works are expected to be complete within a month.

The supervisor of Lungtenphu said cold weather delayed the works. “There are about twenty of us working here. We don’t have a shortage of raw materials. However, because of the cold, we cannot work like in summer,” said Karma Dupchu, the construction supervisor of Lungtenphu.

Hith Gurung, a worker in Babesa said “due to the cold weather, it is difficult to start early morning. We start working only at around 9 am.”

Besides the cold weather, contractors said since all the workers are Bhutanese, it is difficult for them to work like non-national labourers in terms of work pace and skills.

Meanwhile, according to Thimphu Thromde officials, difficulty in getting clearance for construction in some sites delayed the works.

Thimphu Thrompon Kinlay Dorjee said it would take over a month to complete the constructions.

Meantime, Thromde will also allocate the areas to vendors before opening the markets. The office has been receiving applications from vendors for the space.
