The 21st Century Economic Road Map will have a high-level meeting next week to discuss and identify the key area objectives and targets to create economic opportunities for the next generation. The National Task Force for the Economic Road Map is ready with the preliminary report based on indicators such as GDP contribution and employment generation for now.

The Economic Road Map will focus on the growth and development of the private sectors. The road map will also have an economy driven by technology. This according to the National Task Force is in line with His Majesty’s vision on creating a digital society.

Kinga Tshering, the Chairperson of The National Task Force for the 21st Century Economic Road Map says the vision of economic road map and the goal will be driven by His Majesty’s command. “We have the rest of the year to work primarily in consultation with so many stakeholders all across the country. We have to prepare our youth, we have to give them the skills for the 21st-century economy driven by technology, driven by digital data, driven by all these skills which can be actually exported from Bhutan to the rest of the world in the 21st century in line with His Majesty’s vision,” he said.

Social sectors such as education, health and infrastructure will also be the key drivers to facilitate the generation of extra wealth and employment.

According to the chairperson, the COVID-19 situation has actually compelled the sense of urgency to adopt the 21st Century Economic Road Map. “This has been articulated in Royal vision many years ago, way back before COVID-19. I think the COVID-19 situation, even though is a very unfortunate disruption to our ongoing work and progress at the same time, this has been a perfect vision. It has now given us the urgency to do it faster, do it much more urgently,” he added.

The final road map will be launched on His Majesty’s Birthday next year and will be implemented till 2030.
