Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering, Cabinet, Members of Parliament and other senior officials offered thousand butter lamps to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Bangladesh’s Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Thimphu today.

Led by the Tsugla Lopen, a prayer ceremony was also performed at the Kuenray of Tashichhodzong.

March 17th is an important date in the history of Bangladesh as it marks the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who devoted all his efforts to make Bangladesh an independent nation. Consequently, Bangladesh was declared an independent country in 1971 and Bhutan became the first country in the world to recognize the newly independent state.

“Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman lived only about 55 years. But most of his life was spent behind the bars especially for the cause of the Bangla people. He was a great human being but also at the same time he loved Bengalis so much, he wanted Bengalis to be free from hunger, poverty and also he wanted political freedom for his people. So his almost whole life was spent for the struggle of the reconstruction of the Bengali nation. So that’s why Bangabandhu means friend of Bengal or friend of Bengalis. And because of his love for Bengalis, he is the undisputed leader of Bangladesh,” said A.K.M. Shahidul Karim, the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Bhutan.

Observing the day, the Bangladeshi Embassy also released commemorative postage stamps.
