Foresters of Phrumsengla National Park rescued an adult male leopard that was trapped in a snare at Tsamang in Monggar, yesterday evening after villagers informed them.

As the animal didn’t sustain any injuries, it was released in the forest. The animal is suspected to have been entrapped in a wild boar trap as the snare was attached to a fencing pole.

Leopards are among the 24 animals listed under the Totally Protected Species of wild animals of the Forest and Nature Conservation Rules and Regulation of Bhutan (FNCRR), 2017. Globally, the leopard population has been decreasing and is threatened by poaching and shrinking habitat.

Leopards are recorded as Vulnerable on the International Union For Conservation of Nature Red List.
