Farmers of Jongthang village under Nubi Gewog in Trongsa requests local authorities for a motor-able bridge over the Mangdechhu. It will give them easy access to their farmlands situated on the other side of the river.
Without a motor-able bridge, life has been difficult for years. Farmers have to cross the river to reach their farmlands. Locals say at present they use a suspension bridge, which could be replaced.
“Since all our lands are on the other side of the river, we have to be always on the move. So if a bridge is constructed nearby, then we can practice mechanized farming and use fallow lands too,” said Sangay Dorji, from Jongthang under Nubi Gewog in Trongsa.
“If the bridge is constructed, the villagers of Pang, Bemji, Jongthang and Mangdephu will be immensely benefitted as we need not follow the existing route via Gagar which mostly remain impassable,” added Jampay Lhendup, from the same village.
“Wetland is very important for us as we depend on agriculture but it is on the other side of the river. And even the community forest lies there and we do not get a permit to fell trees from other places,” also added Tandin.
But the gewog will soon construct a five-kilometre ring road connecting several villages. A bridge is planned but in a different location.
“The location is from Thrisipang and it stretches for about a kilometre before reaching at Pangleyma. There are plenty of stones there. The place there is narrow and suitable to construct a bridge and we could also minimise cost,” said Ugen Tenzin, the Nubi Gup.
Currently, there are about thirty households whose farmlands are on the other side of the river.
