The classrooms of Merag Primary School in Trashigang are now warmer and students look forward to attending their regular classes despite the beginning of the cold winter season. This is because all the classrooms have wall-mounted panel heaters installed.

Merag lies at the altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level and the weather remains cold thorough out the year except for three months of June July and August.

The school installed 24 wall-mounted heaters and classrooms’ wall were all wood-panelled last year with the support from Bhutan Foundation and Bhutan Ecological Society.

The school says the students are now able to concentrate more on their studies.

“From the ministry and dzongkhag education office, we even got cash price as soelra in 2017 and even in 2018 as the school performance has improved compared to the past,” Zung Dorji, the School Principal, said.

“In the past, it was too cold in the classrooms, we cannot even read and write during our morning study time, but now with the heaters, it has benefitted us a lot. We are able to be attentive in the classes,” Sangay Yangzom, a student, said.

At present, the Merag Primary School has around 185 students and 9 teachers including the Principal.
