Poorly maintained and narrow roads in and around Samdrup Jongkhar town is a concern for the residents. The roads are riddled with potholes, filled with rain-water further deteriorating the road condition. Residents say driving is a pain, and its set for the worst during the rainy season.

Poorly maintained road is also posing risk to the students, who walk every day to school. The heavy traffic and students together every morning means parents are required to walk children to schools every day and back. The safety along narrow road leading to Samdrup Jongkhar Primary school is said to be a serious concern. The school is located on the other side of the river.

One of the parents, Pema Gyeltshen said the matter is made worst with heavy vehicles parked along the roadside for repair. Automobile repair and maintenance workshops are located along the road as it being the town’s industrial estate. Something needs to be done urgently like road widening and construction of foot path for pedestrian, said another worried parent.

According to the Thromde, maintenance and development plans are being drawn up. The assistant engineer of the Thromde, Damchu Zangmo said works are being tendered, which include the roads. She said the existing 3.5 meter roads will be widened to 7 meters.

Meanwhile, works on the 1.4 kilometer in and around the industrial area is likely to begin next month.
