The Education Ministry has targeted to increase the number of girls to score above 60 per cent in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in BCSE examination in the financial year 2019-2020.
This was highlighted by the education ministry during the review on the Education Ministry’s Annual Performance Agreement (APA) 2019-2020 yesterday.
The Education Ministry presented Six APA objectives of the ministry and its targets to fulfil those objectives. The objectives of the ministry’s APA include to enhance the wellbeing of children and youth, to enhance teaching profession, to enhance access and equitable quality tertiary education and to enhance access to quality training and skills among others.
According to the Education Ministry, one of the success indicators of the ministry is to increase girls scoring above 60 per cent in STEM subjects in the BCSE examination and the ministry targets to fulfil it during the financial year 2019-2020. The ministry said this particular target is based on understanding or findings that girls are less interested in STEM subjects. The ministry also said that currently there is a lesser number of girls enrolment in STEM subjects in schools.
To this, the Prime Minister said that the ministry should look into why the girls are performing poorly in STEM subjects and what the ministry has done to ensure that they score better in these subjects.
The ministry also targets to reduce attempted suicide case among students and to decrease the number of youth in conflict with the law among others.
The Prime Minister on these targets said APA targets in the education ministry should provide clarity towards quality education for the children that will result in gainful employment and quality life.
Similarly, the health Ministry also presented their APA to the Prime Minister yesterday. Lyonchhen highlighted that the ministry’s APA should entail policy changes for improved health services that would touch the lives of the people in the deep pockets of the country.
The Prime Minister has been reviewing the performance agreements of ministries and other agencies before its formal signing in the coming month.
