Starting from next year, the department of trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs will lift the supply of subsidized Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinders from the four Thromdes of Thimphu, Phuentshogling, Gelegphu and Samdrup Jongkhar.

Recognizing the growing demand for LPG cylinders in the country, the Department of Trade rolled out non-subsidized LPG with an objective to provide more access to subsidized gas cylinders to rural and low-income households. However, despite various reforms and initiatives by the department, not many people have surrendered their subsidized LPG and availed non-subsidized gas cylinders.

The move to discontinue the supply of subsidized LPG cylinders in 4 Thromdes is expected to make subsidized gas cylinders easily accessible to rural and low-income households and address the shortage of LPG cylinders in the country as well.
