Little Tern, a new waterbird spotted in the country recently, takes Bhutan’s bird species record to 743.

The bird was first sighted on Saturday along the Punatsangchhu by two forestry officials while taking part in the Global Big Day, a day for birders to see how many bird species can be spotted in a day.

Birders throughout the country spotted 257 species on that day taking Bhutan to 31st position out of 258 countries.

Little Tern is normally seen in certain parts of Europe and breeds in America, Eurasia, Africa and Australasia.

Spotting of such new species of birds is an indication that the country has rich biodiversity and well-protected habitats.
