The residents of Thimphu town no longer have to worry about waste disposal when they miss garbage trucks on waste collection days. The Thimphu Thromde recently came up with its first waste segregating facility.

The facility is located below Kelki Higher Secondary School.

There are five different disposal bins, one each for pet bottles, plastics, papers, metals, and food and other wastes. Residents have to segregate wastes before dumping.

The facility will be monitored with CCTV surveillance cameras and defaulters will be fined.

“Before bringing your wastes here, please segregate them properly. The organic waste collected will be used to make manure,” Kinlay Dorjee, the Thrompon, said.

The thromde said it is a pilot project. If successful, it plans to initiate similar facilities in other parts of the town.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to solve the waste management issue and help our youth by creating employment opportunities,” Kinlay Dorjee said.

Also, thromde has plans to install a second-hand shop inside the waste management area whereby they will sell the reusable toys and other good items.

Today, the Thimphu Thromde has 26 garbage collection trucks.
