People of Lingzhi Gewog under Thimphu Dzongkhag now have internet connectivity. The Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC) through South Asia Satellite connected the gewog to internet.

Now, only three gewogs in the country are left with internet access. With exposure to virtual and digital world, people in Lingzhi will be empowered economically and socially, said the officials from the Department of Information Technology and Telecom (DITT).

The department said locals can become informed citizen by watching both the channels of National Television BBS through internet.

Those areas where BBS channels are not accessible, villagers can downlink the channel through free-to-receive terminals which are available in the market. With that digital equipment, they don’t have to pay monthly subscription fee.

“We have prioritised installation of internet in Lingzhi, Soe, Naro gewogs because they are not connected through our fibre optics. We initiated to provide community centres to empower villagers,” said Jigme Thinlye Namgyal, Director General of DITT.

The ministry’s press release also states Soe and Naro gewogs will be connected to internet by the end of this month. However, radio signals will be available only after three months.
