Increasing number of customers are availing themselves of the Senior Citizen Priority Counter service of the Bank of Bhutan (BoB).

Since its introduction in January this year, close to a thousand people from across the country used the service so far.

“Daily 20 to 30 customers come here, most of them come here to withdraw from their pension account and deposit in their saving accounts,” said Dechen Zangmo Rinchen, the Banking Assistant of BoB Thimphu.

The Senior Citizen Priority Counter provides all banking services except foreign exchange. A person aged 60 years and above is eligible to avail oneself of the services from the Counter.

When the counter is not catering to its senior citizen clients, it functions as any other counter providing services to other clients. But priority is given to a senior citizen if there is one approaching the counter.

“When the counter was not introduced, we had to wait in queue and at this age, it is tiring to wait in queues. Now, it’s very convenient for us. The counter specially catering to us provides prompt services,” said Kin Gyeltshen.

Other senior citizens in the capital have similar views to share with BBS News. Langa Tshering said: “Unlike before, now we can produce the senior citizen card and do our banking works conveniently.”

Established in 1968, Bank of Bhutan is the country’s oldest and largest financial institution with its branch offices opened elsewhere in the country.
