Farmers living in many remote villages will be able to process the trade license for small businesses or procure the permit for using forestry resources right in their village.

In the past, they had to either travel to the Gup’s office or the district administration office. In many cases, they had to come all the way to the capital Thimphu.

Now all they have to do is visit the community centre, right in their geog.

The community centres are equipped computers, a scanner, a printer, a photocopy machine, and a digital camera. Many are connected with internet.

The government yesterday opened 23 such community centres and 62 G2C services. G2C stands for government to citizens. It is an initiative to reach the most common services to the people quickly, electronically.

Launching the centre in Eusu Geog in Haa yesterday, the Prime Minister Jigmi Thinley said the community centres will help bring public services to the people.

By mid next year, all the geogs will have a centre each, connected with fiber optic cable. It is estimated to cost the government more than a billion ngultrums.

Coinciding with the launch, some of the villagers availed themselves of services like getting approval for collecting firewood and transferring their census.
