Farmers in Bumthang will no longer have to sell organic farm produce along the roadside.

The Department of Agriculture has built a new organic farm produce outlet in the locality of Chamkhar town.

It was inaugurated this afternoon by the Agriculture and Forests Minister.

Organic farming is fast gaining popularity in Bumthang valley. But in the absence of proper place, farmers have been unable to sell their produce.

“The main aim of this outlet is to promote local produce. If you go the vegetable market, you will see local and imported farm produces mixed together. With this outlet, we want to promote local organic products,” said Gaylong, the Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer.

Eight farmers groups from Tang, Chumey, Chhoekhor and Ura Geogs brought farm produce and other products for sale at the opening of the outlet.

The outlet also has a community seed bank. It contains seeds of different traditional crops cultivated by farmers in the dzongkhag.

The outlet was constructed with financial support from UNDP’s Global Environment Facility.
