Housing shortage in Damphu likely to ease

Damphu has been facing an acute housing shortage which the residents blame on a suspension on the construction on residential buildings in the extended municipal area in Damphu.

Construction was suspended in 2002 citing the absence of facilities like drinking water and electricity. And even after the area was connected with drinking water and electricity, the suspension remained in force. This time, the reason was the delay in drawing up the structural plan and demarcation works.

The wait, it seems, is over. The town’s structural plan is divided into three phases. The demarcation of the first phase is almost complete. By next month, those who own land in the first phase of the plan can start construction.

Over 100 plots for residential building have been demarcated in the first phase.

“Till now, we have been denied approval to construct even a hut on our own land but now the wait is over. And we are happy,” said Rinzin, a resident.

The number of people residing in Damphu has almost doubled during the last few years.

Without any new construction coming up, the rent has been shooting through the roof.

“Civil servants till now faced a lot of problem finding affordable housing. With the town plan now approved, many houses will come up. The civil servants will be able to get houses at cheaper rents.”

After the first phase, urban planners will be working on the second phase, which includes the core town area.
