The Election Commission is still waiting for directives from the Government to hold the Local Government Election. The recent parliament session resolved that the Election Commission should be able to go ahead with the election despite the issue of satellite towns unresolved.
The Chief Election Commissioner, Dasho Kunzang Wangdi, said the Commission has not received any directives from the Government on the Local Government Election. Dasho said they cannot say anything on the election.
“We need to be formally communicate on the decision the government and parliament have taken, so without those being communicated it is going to be very difficult for us,” Dasho said.
When asked on whether the Election Commission will be able to conduct election as indicated by the Government through media Dasho said it would be against the law.
“We see now the Local Government Act itself is not consistent with the Constitution…..so until some of these issues get reflected, which will be in confirmative with the Constitution, I see there will be some difficulty in it,” he said.
The Chief Election Commissioner said if the Supreme Court gives interpretation of the Laws and clear directives to go ahead with the election without the Yenla Thromdey issue resolved, the Election Commission will work towards election accordingly.
