Bumthang will now have a stable power supply. This is made possible with the commissioning of the Garpang power substation in Chamkhar this morning.

This Garpang power substation has a transmission line connection from Yurmo in Trongsa. It carries 66 kilovolt but as of now 33 kilovolt has been commissioned.

With this substation in place, residents here will no longer have to light candles to run their errands at night occasionally. People will also no longer have to prepare meals on gas stoves. This time, the power supply will have much higher voltage.

Bumthang Dzongkhag got power supply in 1988 soon after Chumey power substation was built. But with the passage of time, the power supply from Chumey was irregular on most occasions.

The Garpang substation is part of Tingtibi, Trongsa and Bumthang transmission project. The Government of India funded some Nu. 642 million for the project while the Royal Government funded Nu. 69 million.
