The people of Khothagpa of Shumar Gewog in Pema Gatshel are all smiles now that they have a new lhakhang in their village.

The lhakhang, built at a cost of more than Nu 2m, was consecrated yesterday. The ceremony was presided over by the Dzongkhag Lam Neten.

Shortage of space was a major problem the villagers faced in the past while conducting community rituals as the old lhakhang was small.

“It doesn’t even look like a lhakhang,” says Jamtsho, a local villager. “It was built by our parents. Before that, they pitched tents to hold rituals,” he added.

The old lhakhang will be now used as a store and pavilion for the guests during the village’s annual tshechu.

“The new one looks beautiful and we are happy to have it,” says Jamtsho.

It will benefit about 1,500 people of the 50 households in Khothagpa.
