Heavy and medium vehicles will not be allowed to enter Thimphu Thromde roads during peak traffic hours in a new initiative by Thimphu Police. The initiative introduced yesterday is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving pedestrian safety.
Except for the buses, the movement of heavy and medium vehicles including earth moving equipment is banned from 8 to 10 in the morning and 3 to 6 in the evening.
Earlier, the heavy and medium vehicles were restricted from entering only the core town area.
SP Yeshay T Phuntsho of the Royal Bhutan Police said they are aware that the restriction will affect constructions and road works. “There will be problems but we have to look at the larger public benefit and good.”
The SP added whether or not the ban will remain in place would depend on how effective it proves to be in improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
