Government constructed farm roads in remote villages to boost socio-economic development. And while, some farm roads have brought in socio-economic benefits in the local communities, some have not really served its purpose.

One such farm road is in Gengu Village under Darla Gewog in Chhukha. The eight kilometre stretch of road has not benefited the villagers.

Since settlements are scattered over the landscape, the farm road has not reached to the doorstep of many villagers.

The road is narrow, uneven and bumpy, and has sharp turnings. That is why during off monsoon period, only heavy vehicles like Boleros can be able to drive through it.  And during rainy season, the road remains inaccessible.

“Farm road is the biggest issue here. Whenever people get sick or someone dies, we have to carry them till the road point. It is therefore very difficult for us,” said a villager, Karma Drukpa.

He further said the renovation and extension of farm road has been included in the 12th five year plan.

“Government did its best to provide us the farm road. But the road didn’t reach our village. During the meeting here, maintenance and extension of the road has been included in the 12th FYP. We will be grateful if works start as soon as the plan begins”.

The gewog officials in Darla said like Gengu Village, other villages have the same problem.

“During the 12th FYP, we will be working on farm road maintenance, construct drains, walls, and all the necessity works for the farm roads,” said the Gup of Darla Gewog, Mil Kumar Mongar.

The farm road was constructed in 2011 and over 65 households are heavily depended on it.
