Judiciary instituted specialised benches at Thimphu District Court, today. The specialisation is to facilitate speedy, fair, and just judicial services to the public.

There will be five specialised benches: Criminal bench I and 2, Family and Children, Commercial, and Civil.

Criminal Bench 1 will deal with criminal cases excluding criminal cases related to Children and Bench 2 will conduct trials in absence of the Judge of the Bench 1.

Family and Children Bench will handle all the cases pertinent to family and children. For instance, assault or battery cases, child custody, and children in conflict with laws will be dealt by the bench.

Commercial Bench will conduct trials of cases associated with monetary issues.

Civil Bench will have judicial authority over determining cases involving land and property inheritance disputes, and any other cases of civil nature.

Judicial officials say specialist Judges or Drangpons will be appointed to take over the specialised benches.

The Chief Justice, Lyonpo Tshering Wangchuk signed the guidelines for the functioning of specialised benches.
