More than 60 election-related cases were filed with the Election Commission of Bhutan during the fourth National Assembly Elections which ended recently. This also includes more than 30 cases reported to the Office of the Media Arbitrator. The ECB also levied fines for violation of electoral rules in 25 cases.
The Election Commission recorded six election-related cases during the Primary Round. And during the General Round, the commission received 22 cases.
Likewise, the Office of the Media Arbitrator recorded 34 cases.
According to the ECB, the cases were mostly related to defamatory remarks and third-party advertisements.
From the 62 cases, the commission issued warnings and public reprimands in 28 cases.
According to the ECB, nine cases were dismissed.
The ECB collected Nu 720,000 as fines from the cases which will be deposited in the Government’s revenue.
Meanwhile, the ongoing election petition period will end on the 24th of this month. No petition has been filed with the high court so far.
