Trashigang renovated 827 Chorten this year, the highest in the country. The district is in the process of renovating 20 more.
The renovation, being carried out across the country, is the government’s initiative.
The initiative began in May last year to commemorate the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
Of the 2,584 chorten, which require renovation, some 1,900 have been renovated till May, this year.
These Chorten were vandalised, damaged by natural calamities, or neglected.
The home ministry’s Department of Culture said renovation have been completed in Sarpang, Zhemgang and Tashi Yangtse.
The work includes re-installation of relics, structural renovation, painting, and roofing.
Dzongkhag administrations are carrying out the renovation. No separate budget has been allotted.
The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay joined the locals to restore a Chorten at Dodena in Thimphu last year to officially begin the initiative.
The actual completion date was November last year but works still continue.
There are more than 10,000 Chorten registered with the Department of Culture.
