Bhutan cannot generate 10,000 MW electricity by 2020- Government responds to NCThe National Council’s Chairperson, Dasho Sonam Kinga said they have received an official confirmation from the government that Bhutan will not be able to generate 10,000 MW electricity by 2020.

The issue came up today while the Upper House was discussing government’s response on NC’s recommendations on hydropower plans and policies.

NC’s Special Committee had come up with numerous recommendations during the previous session.

Special Committee said delay in preparing Detailed Project Reports of Chamkharchu, Kuri-Gongri, Sunkosh and Amochu is slowing down the progress.

Meanwhile, a few NC members are not satisfied with the government’s response on hydropower plans and policies.

Not involving Bhutanese engineers in the integral hydropower construction works and cost escalation of hydropower constructions is one of them.

They decided it would be suitable to form an adhoc or a special committee to seek satisfactory responses from the government.
