Bhutan, along with other SAARC countries, dwelt on climate-change-trigged common challenges; the region faces during a conference in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, last week.
A press release from the European Union said the meeting was to discuss disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
The release says South Asia faces effects of climate change in more ways than natural disasters and that climate change is affecting water and food security.
“I am confident that conference deliberation will be instrumental in designing additional DRR and climate change adaptation related projects within the larger SAARC development framework,” said the EU Ambassador to SAARC countries, Rensje Teerink.
The conference was felt necessary following the 2015 earthquake in Nepal that killed 9,000 people, injured 22,000, and destroyed 800,000 homes.
“It has created a sense of urgency towards mitigation and adaptation plan from natural disasters,” said the press release.
The European Union hosted the event.
